Hello,

dd - convert and copy a file ( block to block )
if = input
of = output

You have just over written anything on /dev/sda1 with X.img. No turning back now if you do not have a backup.
If /dev/sda1 was your OS and if you have a different partition for /home you could use rescue disk get data off. Or if /home was in a different partition during install you could make that home again and do not let it format that partition.

Good Luck

There is chance he has just wiped the grub partition(slim) and could still mount the LVM and view the partition to get his/your stuff off etc..

Re: Guys I need help .............

I wonder if TESTDISK would help in a situation like this?

You could try booting a live cd and see if you can find anything on the now-messed-up disk.

Re: Guys I need help .............

If you've dd'd it, it's going to be difficult, if not impossible, to get it back.

As for there being an easy way to roll back a dd command, it wasn't all that easy to damage it--there is a sequence that had to be deliberately typed--like rm -rf, you have to be careful where you aim it--if it makes you feel any better, almost everyone involved with computers for any length of time has done one or the other in the wrong place.

Just a suggestion for the future---a title like I need help is often going to be ignored by busy people scanning thread titles--always better to put a more descriptive title.

Re: Guys I need help .............

Do you recall how big is x.img? Likely it's pretty big.

dd is a very low-level command with very high power. It takes whatever is in "if" and puts as much of "if" as there is room at "of", which, in your case, is sda1.

Forensic experts use dd and its derivatives to analyze whatever is / was on a disk partition.

In any case, the only thing remaining of your stuff on sda1 isbeyond the total size of x.img.

Let us know the sizes of those, and what you used sda1 for, and let's see where we can go from there.

---------- Post added at 07:27 PM CDT ---------- Previous post was at 07:18 PM CDT ----------

Also, you will likely have to use dd further to get anything useful.
