Secure dovecot server setup for remote IMAP

Can anyone point me to a good tutorial or documentation on the steps to secure dovecot so that I can access my email from the internet? I've got dovecot running locally on my home machine, but using non-secure IMAP. I guess I'll need to create a self-signed certificate and configure dovecot to use it. Will I need to do anything to be able to send mail also?
