Question Flashing icon next to my name in Gnome 3

First of all I don't get the point of having the status here, but yet the icon is now flashing - regardless what I select (Available or busy) it changes to 3 little stars - what is that all about?

I have uninstalled Empathy as I don't really like it, hence the status and icon are pointless.

Any idea though why it would flash?
