Gnome 3 Compatability Guide?

Is there a Gnome 3 compatibility guide? I've got an "ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27)", according to lspci. When I start a session, I get the "fallback" message and much of the Gnome3 eye candy is missing.

If my Rage is unsupported, and it's on the motherboard, will I have much luck installing a new card and trying to use it instead of hte on board device?

Regards

How about an F15 / ATI guide? http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=262634

Re: Gnome 3 Compatability Guide?

Thanks for the pointer. I tried one of the packages and now X won't start at all, I can still get into runmode 3 so I may try uninstalling it and installing the other. What's the worst that can happen, I might have to reinstall the whole thing, no big deal. Anyway, thanks again.

Re: Gnome 3 Compatability Guide?

i think they blacklisted some ati models... i know in the same blacklist they killed intel i8xx (and so my laptop lost gnome 3).

I wonder if there is a way to remove or bypass the black list...

Re: Gnome 3 Compatability Guide?

the Rage cards are too old to support the Shell. It's a really, extremely old card, I'm afraid =) ATI switched over to the 'Radeon' naming I think in 2000 or 2001, so your card is at least older than that.

installing a newer card on the motherboard would help, yes, though with a system that old you may have trouble finding one; I would suspect your motherboard has either only PCI slots, or PCI and very old AGP. It can be hard to find modern cards for those slots any more, as the industry switched to PCI Express a few years back, and most new cards are only made as PCI-E.
