rhythmbox skipping during mp3 playback

hey I've been searching and can't quite find an explanation as to why or any troubleshooting on the subject

Rhythmbox tends to skip or even go silent and act like its playing a song when its not. Occurs most frequently when starting a new task such as opening a new application.

any help, suggestions? is it better to just run a different player? is the issue just that mp3s arent truly supported?
