Unable to add or remove programs

Running Fedora 16 on an Acer laptop with 3 GB of Ram, and an AMD processor (1.60 GHz dual core). I installed Fedora as a curiosity... I really like the interface, but I can't figure out how to install new programs. Trying to use the add/remove programs application is frustrating because after clicking a category or searching the program fades and does nothing. Whenever I download a program manually online and try to run it with the software installer, it takes about 5-10 minutes for the window to pop up, then, after clicking on install, it gives an error message. Clicking on details says that the it timed out while waiting for a response. RAWR!

Any help at all? I would love to continue uring Fedora, but I would really like to add new programs.

Update: After waitiing a while at the Add/Remove Screen, it came up with an error saying that Yum is being blocked by '/usr/bin/python /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py get-updates none'. I'm going to hunt around for it.

Re: Unable to add or remove programs

Have a read of the Fedora User Documentation and the Admin Doc which are online.

Have a go at YUM. Use terminal, go to root with su, input your root password

] # yum install ......... insert the program name.

I tried to install Thunderbird using yum - and it aksed me if I ment thinderbird. Used thunderbird and installed it with the icon in Internet group.

Cheers John

Re: Unable to add or remove programs

Packagekit is the program that checks for updates and will block any installs until it's done it's thing. It can be disabled, but be patient and it will clear up in a few minutes.
