Sound level confusion

Heyas

Situation:
After installing with my scripts, rebooting from init 3, going successfull into GUI.
Started VLC and played the DVD, picture's well, but i hear nothing at all... there is to say, i usualy hear an ant through 2 walls (methaphoric speech). Anyway, at first i thought my scripts didnt work, and it didnt install the sound files, but it had. Afterwards i figured the default sound level was either zero or almost zero.

So actualy i got 2 questions..
1) Why is the default sound level of a live media installation diffrent than after installing the sound packages on a minimal installation?
2) Is there a way to set the volume from cli? (is /proc the right path to look for this??)

Thank you.

I know alsamixer command can be used to adjust volume from command line. But, whenever I have tried, it is only a ncurses based GUI. The man page, as far as I can tell, does not give any details about passing parameters for volume without invoking the gui.

I do not know if this would be of any use for you but thought I would mention ...
