Re: Login authentication failure

That is intentional. You should not be running as root; use SU to make necessary changes. That said, if you comment out the line ending in "!= root" from each of the two files /etc/pam.d/gdm and /etc/pam.d/gdm-password, you'll be able to hose your system more easily.

Re: Login authentication failure

Read my response above if your problem is that you are unable to login as root via the gui!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Classic. I'm not sure which is better, this quote or that he thanked you for helping him hose his system.

develfedora, If you're talking about an old "normal" user, you've probably got conflicting configs that your newer desktop doesn't know how to handle. Try removing applicable old dotfiles (like .Xclients) and dotdirs (like .config), then try to log in again. These files are under /home/yourusername/.whatever in case you don't know.

By the way, Gnome 3 sux (just taking the opportunity to point that out, thanks)

I'm having the exact same problem. As the fedora instance in question is a VM I can see it rebooted on the 18th for an unknown reason. When I went to turn it back on I can no longer access the system using the correct password at the gui or via the command line. SSH no longer seems to be available either. I know my username and password is correct.

I do run full disk encryption as this system is used for business. Not sure if that matters or not.

Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to supply.
