Try booting from a previous kernel. You can select a kernel early in the boot process from the grub boot menu using the up and down arrows.

re-installed bash on my gateway 1624m and the fix worked thanks

reinstalling bash fixes my dim control on dell inspirion 1521 .....really strange!
