installing brother mfc-5490cn

hi everyone,

I installed Fedora 16 and now Im trying to get my brother MFC-5490CN all-in-one printer to work. On the Brother website I found this article explaining how to do it: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...tion_prn3.html

I downloaded the LPR drivers for my printer and followed the steps. After completing the steps nothings happens. I can print, fedora doesn't see the printer. Does anyone know how to help me?

to configure the printer go to http://localhost:631/ or use the printer configuration tool.

Thanks fenrin. I installed the cups driver. The printer now shows up in my printer menu but I can print. It says that the printer is unreacheble. I tried pinging the printer but the result is a message: Destination host unreacheble.

The IP address is correct! I confirmed this. Everyone else in my network can print from their computers (all windows machines).

I don't have any experience with network printers under linux, but maybe you could check the firewall settings. Maybe you have to enable port 631/udp (Network Printing Client).

if you don't have a gui for the firewall configuration yet and would like to use one, you could install system-config-firewall. There you can easily open this port.

You're going to laugh but the problem was that the utp connector on the cable connected to the printer was malfunctioning. I replaced the connector and now the printer is working.
