Some KDE apps are default in Gnome 3

Hi there. On my system, where I have installed both KDE and Gnome 3, some KDE applications start by default in Gnome session. The most annoying ones are Apper, for software installation, and KDE Telepathy instead Empathy. Is there a way to switch them back to the default Gnome apps?

Re: Some KDE apps are dedault in Gnome 3

Are they started automatically when you log-in, or when you click the icons? If the former, maybe take a look at gnome-session-propteries. If the latter, it may be that you're just clicking the wrong icons – having applications from multiple desktop environments installed causes a lot of duplicate icons with similar (or even the same) name.

Also check System Settings->System Info->Default Applications, although telephony and PackageKit options aren't listed there.

Re: Some KDE apps are dedault in Gnome 3

Thank you for your reply. These applications are not listed in System Settings->System Info->Default Applications. On every software installation I get Apper, it does not matter if I click on rpm package or the software install process is invoked in another way. When I right click on rpm file to change its default application at the Open with section, as default application is listed "Software Install". So even if I specify Software Install instead of Apper in Open With it still does invoke Apper. KDE Telepathy is invoked when I click on the gnome chat notification to open the chat window. I do have all the Gnome default applications installed. I can start them manualy from the applications menu.

Re: Some KDE apps are default in Gnome 3

You could change associations by editing the /usr/share/applications/defaults.list.

For example, to change rpm associations - to use packagekit ..

Code:
application/x-rpm=gpk-install-file.desktop
It's a fairly long file and generally not too many things (nothing, in my experience) break(s) if you make a mistake. Nevertheless, back up the default file before you edit it.

I've already checked that file up and the line you've mentioned is the same in the defaults.list file. I will try to change it to manualy specify the apps I want.

Re: Some KDE apps are default in Gnome 3

Hello, I'm having the same problem. I installed Fedora 17 spin: scientific, which comes standard kde. But as I prefer to make use of the gnome 3 installed, leaving the two graphical environments, to keep some kde applications. To my surprise some kde applications are by default in gnome, as is the case of empathy, is the same as my colleague says this topic: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=280377, but unlike him, I found the solution. Can anyone help me use the built in gnome empathy only? No like use the telempathy in the gnome. Thanks, God bless

Re: Some KDE apps are default in Gnome 3

Telepathy is a cross-desktop library shared by KDE and GNOME. Empathy (GNOME) and (whatever the KDE client is called) are both just front-ends for it, no more, no less.

You can use Pidgin instead of Empathy if you have a particular reason for avoiding Telepathy, as it uses the Purple library instead, but Telepathy being loaded in GNOME is perfectly normal and intended. It isn't a KDE-specific framework.
