Forcing grub2 to display in console text mode

Anyone know the proper way to force grub2 to display in console text mode (aka disable the framebuffer?) I don't need to disable the linux console framebuffer, just disable the framebuffer for grub2's boot menu.

in framebuffer mode, grub2 is kind of slow to respond and it's irritating me
