F16: No sound except in flash

Hi,

I have a strange (for me) problem:

Hardware card detected, apparently working properly but the only sound I get is via the flash plugin in Firefox.

No other application is making any noise.

Since the flash works then I eliminated possible causes as bad cables, mute (partially) and hardware not being detected.

When starting vlc, for example, in pavucontrol it shows only "Front Left" (???) in Playback pane.

Any suggestion appreciated.
