Been Windows free for 3 weeks now!
Well, I've been using Redhat/CentOS at work for years now, so I finally decided to make the jump to a Fedora 17 Desktop at home. I must say, the transition was easier then I expected. I've been able to find native versions of most of the apps I use, acceptable alternatives for non-native apps, and I've become addicted to the Gnome 3.4 interface. I feel like, even if you only have a little bit of command line skill, the community is very helpful in helping resolve problems. And while I have encountered a few problems, I haven't encountered anything I couldn't resolve or work around yet. I just wanted to say thanks to all the helpful people out there that make Fedora possible!

Congratulations! It gets easier with time. Been about 8 years for me and Windows has become some hard-to-get-around alien environment. Not missing a thing and never slowed my production a bit.

What is this 'Windows' thing people sometimes talk about?
BTW, do get familiar with Virtualbox, since eventually you will need to run a program that only works on Windows, such as Visio or Quicktax. I use WinXP for that - small and fast.

Re: Been Windows free for 3 weeks now!
Welcome! I've been Windows free for around 6 years, though I'd been running open source such as Firefox, Open Office, Gimp etc. on Win Me for a while before I seitched to FC4. I've never looked back, and like Bob i find Windows - on the odd occasion that I do use it - to be alien and not very intuitive.
In my experience F17 seems to be shaping up to be a nice stable version, and even Gnome 3 can be house broken with the aid of the various addd-ons, so you've chosen a good time to join us.

Re: Been Windows free for 3 weeks now!
For the case you're getting fed up of gnome 3, fedora offers a wide spread choice of alternate Desktop Environments (DE), such as KDE, XFCE, LXDE, Sugar, and many more!

Re: Been Windows free for 3 weeks now!
Thanks everyone!
Lol RupertPupkin, that is awesome. I actually do have a copy of XP SP2 running in VirtualBox, for assisting with Wine stuff. I plan on getting Dosbox up too though! Not for for 3.1, but Command HQ and Castles!
About the other environments, I've used several over the years, but Gnome 3.4 is really the one that drew me into using Linux for home desktop use, so I kinda want to master it before I move on to something else. Something about the simplicity of everything, I'm hooked. Research shows that the human brain doesn't multitask well. People who focus on one task at a time consistently out perform people who attempt multiple tasks at the same time. It may seem like a step back for power users... But by removing distractions, I really feel like Gnome 3.4 is a step in the right direction for people who want to be truly productive.

Re: Been Windows free for 3 weeks now!
Congratulations ! Kicking the windows habit can be a real challenge and three weeks is a good start. But sheer will-power and determination might not be enough to see you through those tough times when you might feel tempted to go back to windows, but I am sure you will find some words of encouragement from the forum Stay strong !

Re: Been Windows free for 3 weeks now!
Congrats! That is a good start!
I would be to (rather work with Linux any day), but I still need to develop Windows apps for work, so I have to have at least one dedicated Windoze (XP) machine active at home. Plus my wife has a few apps that only run in Windoze (VM would probably work here). Most time at home is spend on the Linux boxes though. LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird do most of the heavy lifting for us.... Nice to have to different OS's running though. For example I got an Android Tablet for some development work and plugged into one of the Fedora boxes. I could not write to the 'memory' on the tablet (treated as a camera device?). Plugged into the Windows box and it saw it as just a thumb drive basically and I could move files back and forth.... Pays sometimes to 'diversify' and save some time .
