computer keeps dropping connection with reboot

I installed F 17 32 LXDE on my friend's computer.
When signing on, the network icon at the lower right shows with two monitors.
Each time the system is rebooted, the icon has to be clicked, and 'System p4p1' has to be reselected again.

Code:
Wired Network
   disconnected
   -------------------- Available --------------------
   System p4p1

Wireless Networks
   disconnected
-------------------------------------------------------
   VPN Connections
-------------------------------------------------------
   Connect to Hidden Wireless Network...
   Create New Wireless Network...
Ideas about how to keep the selection are much appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for your feedback. Would there be other signs of a glitch?
Should I reinstall with the same CD, or make a new one and install with that?

If the checksum indicated that you got a good download and you feel sure that the CD was a good burn I'd say try it again. You can always try a new download if the problem is still there. I'm not a coder, but I'd suspect that a glitch like this might affect things like bookmarks in Firefox and other settings, as it seems to be affecting the ability to save settings.

Re: computer keeps dropping connection with reboot

Sounds to me like the connection isn't set to "reconnect at boot". On my laptop (Gnome) I have what is seen in the screen shot. On my server which uses Etherenet I have the following in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-em1
Code:
DEVICE="em1"
HWADDR="00:15:F2:00:EB:1A"
BOOTPROTO="none"
ONBOOT="yes"
NM_CONTROLLED="no"
On my desktop in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 I have
Code:
NM_CONTROLLED="yes"
BOOTPROTO=none
DEVICE="eth0"
ONBOOT="yes"
What say you?

Re: computer keeps dropping connection with reboot

I have ' reconnect at boot ' selected as on your laptop Glenn, but I'm 98% sure I didn't have to set it, ie it's a default, which made me suspect a glitch during installation. Even so, it would be worth the OP checking. In Gnome it's under Applications>Other>Network connections, presumably the path in LXDE would be similar.

Re: computer keeps dropping connection with reboot

Sometimes for me it isn't automatically selected, usually on the desktops for some reason. At any rate, I thought it was something worth looking at.

Re: computer keeps dropping connection with reboot

While it's not something I'd come across - as I said, I thought ' connect on boot ' was the default - I'll remember that in case I ever find I can't connect with a new install. There's probably a case for not connecting on boot when using wifi, we've heard about ' man in the middle ' hacks when using coffe shop wifi, on my laptop, running Macpup, Frisbee will only connect automatically to trusted sites, such as my home wifi.

The boxes like in the photo you posted are blank. Below is what shows up in the terminal.

Code:
# cat /etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=computer
NTPSERVERARGS=iburst
[root@computer ~]#

Can someone direct me to a basic primer on how to edit /etc/sysconfig/network to get ONBOOT="yes" please.
