Laptop keeps "Oh no! Something has gone wrong!"

For the first few weeks I used F17 everything worked great. Then all of a sudden I noticed when I would try to go into standby it would hang (not the kernel as I could still toggle the caps lock) but I can't get to a terminal, can't reload the UI I just had to pull the plug on the computer to get it to shut off. At first I assumed it was my constant screwing around, but after two clean installs and this time I made sure I didn't tinker, I suspect something is wrong with my hardware or somehow I have goofed something up. In any case if anyone with more knowledge than I has some time to go through I managed to delete the messages log RIGHT before I closed the lid and it crashed, so the report should contain only pertinent information (assuming it was written there).

Thanks ahead of time for anyone that may have some ideas.

Re: Laptop keeps "Oh no! Something has gone wrong!"

Okay, after 4 hours of troubleshooting here's what I've determined. The easiest way to repliate the problem is to open two or three programs at once (Evolution, Firefox, Terminal) and then put the computer into suspend. With a totally fresh installation and no additional software installed I can NOT get the laptop to crash, but after running updates it crashes, I therefore conclude on at least my laptop with the updates the computer becomes unstable. I am deploying a new installation on a different laptop to see if I can replicate the problem.

Okay just fresh installed on a completely different laptop and same problem.I have to imagine that other people are beginning to experience the same issue. In any case I'm off to bed, if anyone has any suggestions other than wait for updates let me know. I guess I do feel a little better knowing it's not a hardware issue.

Re: Laptop keeps "Oh no! Something has gone wrong!"

I re-installed on the first computer and just left the installation without updates. As expected a little over a week and still no sign of problems. However, on not 1, not 2 but THREE different laptops once I ran updates after a few uses they all hang up and give me the Oh No! Something has gone wrong!

Has anyone else seen this problem at all, one computer has an Nvidia graphics card the others both have intel. They all have more than enough ram, two have solid state HD and one has a regular SATA. Two are Dell one is Lenovo. One has software installed, two have ONLY what was installed by default by Fedora. I can't find anything in common with the three computers.

Does anyone have any clue where I could look for problems?

KL

Hi Kernellinux
I found three URL's that might help. I realize that they are not F17 but may help anyway.

The last mentions a bug but I have not read it. Also I found the following item.

In any event this should help get a bit of attention for your problem. Cheers...

After the recent kernel linux update, I have experienced the occasional Oh no, something has gone wrong. It is not frequent, but is occurring.

In Spring, roughly around the time F17 was released, a kernel linux update did the same thing. I find F16 to be more stable than F17, and yeah, with a few future updates, it will stabilize again

I am running F16 (64-bit).

Re: Laptop keeps "Oh no! Something has gone wrong!"

First of all just want to say thank you for so much help!! One of the thoughts in one of those threads was a 32/64 bit pakage in the opposite enviorment. Installing 64 bit to see if that has any difference. I just want to say here for anyone coming across this thread that while this is annoying it's by no means a show stopper. F16 works perfectly on my other laptop and if it wasn't for a few tweaks in 17 and my burning desire to try everything new Fedora I would be perfectly happy with it for the next 5 years. Even at it's worst F17 hasn't stopped me from using my computer which is more than I can say for a Windows install I might* get 3 months out of it before it's bloated and needs to be blown away and re-installed.
