Exclamation I want to reinstall fedora 17

Hi, everyone,
I installed 'fedora 17' 2 days ago. I worked fine at first. When I tried to play a song in rythmbox it asked for a plug-in that it later couldn't find.
So I opened an application, 'Software update' or something like that, and it found 732 plug-ins.
And when they were downloaded a message appeared saying that because an unknown error it couldn't install them.
When I later tried to use fedora 17 in the beggining, I think it's called the GRUB said that there was an error with a '/fontconfig'. Wich was from the uninstalled plug-ins.

Then I tried to download VLC Media Player, it couldn't install it because there was an "unfinished" process and the terminal suggested me to run 'yum-complete-transaction' so I did. After doing so for something like 5 times without a result I decided to erase the packages that the last process mentioned several times (now I know I shouldn't have deleted'em).

Now my fedora 17 won't start. The first line says something about powernow-k8.
And then asks me for a code
(System repair#
Something like that.

I really want to learn fedora, I searched about how to reinstall it but I found out that if I erase the fedora 17 partition I will need a Windows CD because the MBR will be screwed so my PC would be unbootable.
And my Windows 7 isn't exactly 'legit' so I don't have the CD.

Could anyone give me a tip? Please

Re: I want to reinstall fedora 17

You should be able to reinstall with the Live CD, and just write over the Linux section as an option. After that you can do a grub2-probe (i think thats the command) to scan for other OS and tables for grub to load if it doesnt work. of course google for more details!

Have a look at Kororaa, it is a Fedora remix that includes the multimedia plugins and lots of other stuff. Link below.

You can also use fedorautils for multimedia codecs. Google fedorautils. ???. Profit.

Thanks, man! It worked perfectly. I reinstalled it with the Live CD. There's an option in the installation menu called "Replace Linux" I think that's how it's called.

Now I'm back in the game. I'm investigating those grub commands though, I wanna set Windows as the main OS since this isn't a computer of my own. I already found the code, it's grub-set-default. I'll continue the struggle.

Thanks again.

Question Re: I want to reinstall fedora 17

I installed Fedora 17, replacing my Windows OS. I would like to reinstall as well. The desktop seems to have degraded into a more KDE or Windows type UI. Initially, it had the top left corner ripple with drop down menu. Now it shows Application and Places there and I need to click on it to make the menus appear. Also it does not seem to allow me to place icons on the desktop.

In any case, I do not have any critical data on the netbook. So I am inclined to reinstall anew.

Would anyone have the procedures mentioned above?

I am a complete novice with Linux.

Cheers,
Michael

Re: I want to reinstall fedora 17

Your gnome shell is just working in fallback mode.

Make sure you didn't accidentally enable forced fallback mode ;-)

What kind of graphics chip do you have?

Are there any error messages?

Does it still work if you boot an older kernel like 3.3.4?

To re-install just save your important files to another drive and then install with the Fedora 17 DVD or any LiveCD just like you did the first time.

Note: re-installation might not solve your problem if it is related to newer updates like kernel 3.5.3 or your display driver.

Re: I want to reinstall fedora 17

Thanks for the reply.

Is there anyway to change the 'fallback' mode? Older kernels do the same thing. I am not getting any error messages. Overall the system seems to run fine. All the drivers for WiFi, USB, Bluetooth, etc... work.

Perhaps I should just wait for F18?

I tried the USB method, which I used initially when the netbook had Windows but now I can only read it as a flash drive after booting up from the hard drive. The netbook won't boot from the USB anymore.

You can recover your OS by LiveCD or LiveUSB

Re: I want to reinstall fedora 17

I tried the LiveUSB method, but the netbook no longer boots from the USB.

However, the USB is visible after booting from the hard drive. Is there a way to reinstall F17 this way?

I should add that when I boot with the LiveUSB, the netbook does at first go to the bootup screen asking which form of F17 to boot from but after choosing the standard startup, it goes to a blank screen....

Re: I want to reinstall fedora 17

In my computer, before de MBR(I think that's what's called) shows up it appears a menu from "Dell Inspiron". In an old ACER computer I saw once a a similar boot.
In both of them you can see two sentences: F-2 for Boot Options and F-12 for Boot Setup. In those menus you can boot from a USB.

I have the same problem again. My brother turned-off the computer by holding down the button and it says there's a firmware bug. I'm gonna try to fix this without reinstalling fedora again. I'll let you guys (and those who might look for this later) if I find a practical way to solve it; if I don't post again, I reinstalled by making a back-up in another drive
