Kernel Panic - Out of Memory

a FC4 ,
On local scsi drive (kernel 2.6.14), rescue disk OR install disk (kernel 2.6.11), I get past GRUB get "Loading kernel....... Loading initrd........" and then "Ok booting kernel" Immediately I get crashes. Most of the time they say "Kernel Panic Out of memory" no more processes to kill. Also once i saw not syncing - trying to kill init.

I have passed several of the options to the kernel from GRUB or from the installer like "mem=256M", nofb, noprobe, rescue, text, etc. I am getting no where with this thing. Does anyone know what would cause these immediate errors?

I am running a P4 1.8Ghz on a Abit BE7 board with 256MB pc3200 400Mhz ram

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

perhaps your RAM is broken i had problems like these by a friend of mine. Have u tried to enter some trash when you see the fedora logo of the boot cd/dvd and then press enter. it was an bug in Fedora that you have to enter something like "hello" before entering "linux rescue" or "linux"

Thank you. The RAM works well in another newer motherboard/cpu combo. I have ordered some new memory from crucial that is "guarenteed" to work with my motherboard, we will see how that goes.
