Decided it was high time I got with the program and upgrade from my Fedora Core (Yarrow) default installation. So after download and doing a disc test i proceeded with the installtion and chose the "UPGRADE" option. BIG MISTAKE - from then on the installation sequence took over and proceed to install basically EVERYTHING from all 5 disc including all avialable languages. The whole process took over 400minutes !!! ) not including time spent reading the installation on each disc)...phew.
Since the installation was on a dual boot system i was concerned of the prospect of aborting in mid-install, but sadly after an exhausting half a day of progress checks the installation suffered a bug with detecting the mouse and so when it rebooted I ended up with the screen flicking back an further between text login and gui eventually ending in a black screen with what looked like distorted chinese script near the top.
In the end I did an NEW default install - reformated the orginal partitions and BANG - it worked (though i stll have to update my grub to recognise the other os) so if anyone out there is also looking to upgrade from FC1 to FC5 i suggest you chose the NEW INSTALLATION option unless you have lots of time (and excess harddrive space) to waste.
