Do you have the livna repo setup for use with yum? If so type this command as root:
yum install gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer08-plugins-extra-audio
That should allow you to play MP3s in rhythmbox.

blue13130 - I'm having some difficulty in playing music files. Could you give me the setup for livna? This is what I have setup:
[livna-stable]
baseurl=http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/3/i386/RPMS.stable/
enabled=0
gpgcheck=1
I'm running FC6, so would I enter 6 in lieu of the 3 above?

Hello:
Go here: http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/UsingLivna
and follow the instructions.
i.e. as root in a terminal copy and paste:
rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-6.rpm
And remove the one you are working with now,as whatever it is, or however you got it, it will only cause you problems.

not all the codecs will work with gstreamer, some will though check out the link in my sig for how to make them work. For easier playback of media I suggest switching to XINE or mplayer for movies and amarok or xmms for music.

I see Seve has given you excellent instructions on setting up Livna. Once you get that setup you can install xmms or audacious to play MP3 files as they are better than rythmbox.
Xmms and Audacious are very similar. I prefer Audacious. To install become root and enter this command after you have livna installed as per Seve's instructions:
yum install audacious audacious-plugins-nonfree-mp3
You can then start audacious by typing audacious from the terminal or you can find it in the GNOME menu under Applications>Sound and Video>Audacious

please note, the music was obtained from a friends son as 'burned' files in MP3 and WMA formats and were copied to my system Is that another issue altogether? If using Windows (ugh) the discs can be copied and/or played via Windows media without a problem. However, when I use my Fedora Core 6 and insert a regular commerical audio CD, it will open in 'Totem' (?) and play. If I insert one of these copied discs, and open in audacious, I get the following:
Unable to play files.
The following files could not be played. Please check that:
1. they are accessible.
2. you have enabled the media plugins required.
I seem to have xmms downloaded, but do not see it in my applications->sound and video.
Again - not knowing process is )(*^&*&%(*&^*(&(*) - :-)

Delete the /etc/yum.repos.d/livna-stable.repo file. You should have livna.repo, livna-testing.repo and livna-devel.repo in /etc/yum.repos.d/.

your livna repo file is not correct. The address is wrong. Remove the livna-release rpm and all livna*.repo files in /etc/yum.repos.d/ and then reinstall the livna-release rpm. The rerun the command to install audacious and things should work.
su -
rpm -e livna-release
cd /etc/yum.repos.d/
rm livna*
rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-6.rpm
yum install audacious audacious-plugins-nonfree-mp3
That should work!
Just for your information, the top few lines of the livna repo file once installed from livna-release rpm should look like this:
[livna]
name=Livna for Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base
baseurl=
http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
http://livna.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/livna/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
http://mirror.atrpms.net/livna/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
ftp://mirrors.tummy.com/pub/rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
failovermethod=priority
#mirrorlist=http://rpm.livna.org/mirrorlist-6
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-livna

blue - your instructions were superb - all worked just as you wrote. The folks who work with the Linux OS have got to be the most patient and generous folks in the universe. I thank you for all the patience and the information.
Now how o play .wma music files?
Bob

Hello:
If you follow the instructions in Post #2 you will have the proper codecs installed to allow you to play wma any many other files.

.WMA for audacious
You can use the list function of yum to see what packages are available for you to install that are related to audacious
As root run 'yum list audacious*' or run as sudo as I have here. This will output a list of all packages in your default yum repos that are named audacious*. It will split the list into what you currently have installed on your machine and what is available in the repo that you do not have installed.
Code:
[sanjay@laptop ~]$ sudo yum list audacious*
Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Excluding Packages in global exclude list
Finished
Installed Packages
audacious.i386 1.2.2-2.fc6 installed
audacious-crossfade.i386 0.3.11-1.fc6 installed
audacious-devel.i386 1.2.2-2.fc6 installed
audacious-libs.i386 1.2.2-2.fc6 installed
audacious-plugins.i386 1.2.5-2.fc6 installed
audacious-plugins-nonfree-mp3.i386 1.2.5-1.lvn6 installed
Available Packages
audacious-docklet.i386 0.1.1-1.fc6 extras
audacious-plugins-amidi.i386 1.2.5-2.fc6 extras
audacious-plugins-arts.i386 1.2.5-2.fc6 extras
audacious-plugins-esd.i386 1.2.5-2.fc6 extras
audacious-plugins-jack.i386 1.2.5-2.fc6 extras
audacious-plugins-nonfree-aac.i386 1.2.5-1.lvn6 livna
audacious-plugins-nonfree-alac.i386 1.2.5-1.lvn6 livna
audacious-plugins-nonfree-wma.i386 1.2.5-1.lvn6 livna
audacious-plugins-pulseaudio.i386 1.2.5-2.fc6 extras
audacious-plugins-wavpack.i386 1.2.5-2.fc6 extras
Listed in the available packages is one named audacious-plugins-nonfree-wma offered by livna, I have a feeling that will help you out
As root (or sudo) run
Code:
yum install audacious-plugins-nonfree-wma
You should then have .WMA playing capability for audacious, and you learned something new about yum also!
Happy new year!

Just for fun, if you wanted more info about a package before you install it, use the info function of yum:
Code:
[sanjay@laptop ~]$ sudo yum info audacious-plugins-nonfree-wma
Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Excluding Packages in global exclude list
Finished
Available Packages
Name : audacious-plugins-nonfree-wma
Arch : i386
Version: 1.2.5
Release: 1.lvn6
Size : 75 k
Repo : livna
Summary: WMA playback plugin for Audacious
Description:
Audacious is a media player that currently uses a skinned
user interface based on Winamp 2.x skins. It is based on ("forked off")
BMP.
This is the plugin needed to play WMA audio files.
