Lost ability to display truetype fonts

For some reason I am no longer able to use truetype fonts (tahoma, verdana, arial etc.) in gnome.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the msttcorefonts-2.0-1 rpm package as well as manually copied the files over to the .fonts directory. I have also restarted xfs.

The funny thing is, I can select the fonts in preferences and they show up correctly in that dialog, but as soon as I apply them, I just get rectangles in place of characters.

The issue started when I issued chmod644 and then chmod744 commands on my home directory, not sure why this has anything to do with it as it hasn't removed any permissions...
