Reading DV Camera on fire wire and Compressing to a DVD

Hi

I have a DV Camera (Panasonic PV_GS31) and a firewire, on windows I use MS Movie maker to read the contents of the DV to my Disk, and then Acrobat encore to compress on a DVD

I need to do the same on Fedora, I have now FC6 and trying to upgrade on 7, there is a builtin firewire there,

I found online: dvgrab and kino as the environment to use it, and I had some problems installing them on FC6, but still didn't try hard,

any advices, or suggestions on best packages, or experiences with DV gradding and compressing on a DVD, will be highly appreciated,

Thank you very much,

Manal

I'm trying on a Fedora 7 whit KINO but with BAD result .
On fedora 7 to activate the fire wire I must , as root in a shell use this command :

Code:
modprob firewire-ochi
then connect the camera

run kino as root

and then start the capture , but praying because crash is normal.

In the better cases KINO crash and I can't rerun it (only afther a REBOOT)

In the tremendous case my machine go frozen and when I can ( not always) open a text shell (CTRL+ALT+F2) and login as root I receive message that say jornaling is disabled for an error and I can't reboot or power off (only hardware reset ) because the shell became frozen too .

In past I had tried also on a fedora core 6 with less problem but Kino go in crash too.

So the question for the GEEK is :
In Fedora 7 is possible put in work (stable) fire wire ?
I must recompile the kernel or there is a specific kernel for fire wire ?

I have tryed the ELIVE distro (a live distro) and KINO work fine so why not on Fedora .
http://www.elivecd.org/

But which distro I can use in order to make video assembly?

Thanks to all

Today I noticed that my external fw/usb drives are no more recognised. Searching for some info, I've found this - which maybe can be useful for you:
