CDRW/DVDRW not showing on desktop and Add/Remove saying put disk in drive...

I am not sure what the actual problem is, but I don't get an icon up on the desktop when I insert a dvd or cd in the drive. The CDRW/DVDRW icon in the computer panel does not work with the drive. I can mount the drive in the terminal and copy from it there and in the gui from the filesystem, but Add/Remove Programs does not see the drive (can't install/upgrade software). I have found plenty of help/howto(s) about mounting the drive, but nothing to get it working properly with the gui and Add/Remove Programs.
