hey guys,

my dual-boot system works beautifly,i love it.

the only problem is i cant get the display on the fedora side to work correctly. the screen is a small box on my moniter's center, and even when i believe i set the display and resolution correctly it still does not make the desktop fill up my entire screen.

everything is hard now.

the small problem is now a huge one.

originally the program would let me restry the specs on my display so the X could run, but then it just took me to prompt. Now the system wont load and when i reloaded it the same problem happenned. i dont know what to do, ill delete it all again.

/etc/X11/XF86Config

within this file are the settings for your screen resolutions

section screen
modes

ensure that the res u are trying to use is listed in the mode section in this file

if not open the file in the text editer and add your res to it

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection

save the changes
log out then back in

What specifically have you tried?

You say that you've tired "the program". What exactly are you doing?

i have tried tried the "settings -> display" options and i beleive "configure->size and resolution" but neither fix the problem.

I have used a command driven unix system before and i think some of the commands are compatible, but i have no found out to open the command window.

im assuming it is somewhat close to opening cmd on dos.

either way i have not been able to fix my screen from 600=800 or somewhat close to that.

let me know if there is a simple way to fix this

To open a terminal window click Main Menu > System Tools > Terminal. Gnome Terminal should start.

Sounds like you've tried Preferences > Screen Resolution and it won't allow you to resize it. In that case, open System Settings > Display and check the hardware tab. Your monitor type and video card should look familiar. I would guess yours should be Dell 1024x768 Laptop Display Panel (under the Dell category) or something similar.

I read the problem you are having and this is common to newer inspiron and the like dell notebooks. The problem is that the BIOS is only telling X there is only a meg of vram. There is an application to tell the bios there is more memory for video. Details can be had here: http://geocities.com/randomnumbergen...dhat_9_display

Make sure you are accessing the XF86Config file as root, or sudo from your user account. If you are not too sure if you are using Vi correctly consult its man page or try using nano for the time being till you are up and running.

If the file is for some odd reason "protected" then you can override that as root with: shift+: then enter save! /etc/X/XF86Config then hit ENTER. As always, make a backup of the config and all your configs should the worst happen
