Unable to use sound - "Dummy output"

Hello everybody, how are you?

Yesterday I have installed fedora 17 on my computer. everything worked great.

I bought today a PCI soundcard and installed Realtek sound drivers.

Unfortunately - I installed it with a root privileges.

Since then - I can't use sound. I'm not able to use any of soundcard. I get this message on the 'sound preferences':

I have googled it a lot but I could not solve this problem.

I really need help. How do I restore the default fedora's sound drivers? they worked great with the onboard soundcard.

Thanks you so much!

So what exactly did you do there ? Explain. If you really installed a driver then you needed to be root.

Generally the driver (not configs) are already present in Linux and you just need to boot to get hardware recognition.

Since this is a pci sound card it should show up when you execute
lspci -nnk
that will also show the driver if any.

Thanks for the reply.

I installed this: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...3&DownTypeID=3

The Linux 3.

Do you know what is the "Dummy output" means?

Re: Unable to use sound - "Dummy output"

Wow - that is one invasive install scheme. They *seem* to rebuild drivers and apps.
Also it seems to be useful only for recent krnes up to 3.2, so there is a good chance the driver build didn't work.
I haven't time but I think it may also rebuild some of the alsa utilities (yikes!).

I think 'dummy' refers the the default virtual device for pulseaudio when no hardware is found.
This extends my confidence that the driver build did not work, and may have junked other drivers.

Is there other sound hardware still installed ?

What is the output of that "lspci -nnk" ? Post the portion about the realtek at least. That will show the precise hardware, then we can consider the correct driver.

Maybe try booting the previous kernel (Fedora keeps several around and you can select at the grub screen during boot). See if that restores the non-PCI audio.

Wow.. your english is perfect!! I wish I could know english as you do :O

Anyway, I already returned the PCI sound card to the store because it's non compatibility for linux ..

I tried to boot from other kernels - the same problem.

However, when I booted from the LiveCD, it showed the non-PCI audio, which means good.

Thanks again!
