The Network Manager detects the networks and his encprytion but I can't connect to any network.

I use a netgear wireless card (wg311T) but I had the same problem, I could see all the wireless networks but using the network manager I couldn't connect. I eventually settled with using the old system-config-network. It's a pain to have to change the essid everytime I'm on the go, but it works.

Hmm I am not sure if I understand the entire problem right, but let's see what happens when you try something a bit different try :

yum -y install wlassistant

And then go to :

Menu>System Settings>More System Settings>Wireless Assistant

And give that appplication a shot.

Once you installed the drivers and firmware, did you run system-config-network and create a wireless connection???

I also had the same problem. Installed fc5 and cannot get the network manager to control right it just plain doesn't work. I may go back to my old fc3 because of it.

The only way I can get mine up is to do
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 key open xxxxxxx
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 essid Myap
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 dhclient

This is not necessary if you have a DHCP managed network. Or at least this i've experienced in my machines.
I have also had some hours long session without configuring also wpa_supplicant.

If you don't create a wireless connection using the config network menus, how is fedora going to know that you have a wireless card and for it to use the wireless extensions that is part of the kernel build??? I am using wpa2, networkmanager with ipw2915 driver also have a vpn and do not have any issues at all. In fact there are 2 good "how to" written on these boards, just do a search.

Is there anyway to make network manager control your wireless card like it's supposed too? The only way i can get it up is to use iwconfig. Is this an fc5 problem? Is there an update for network manager i could apply? Is there a file I could edit?

It's a pain in the ass to have to use iwconfig everytime I take my laptop to a coffee shop.

Do you have NetworkManager running now??? If you are running gnome goto System -->Administration -->Services. There should be check marks in the top 2 services, NetworkManager, and NetworkManagerDispatcher and make sure you save the changes. Do this also for runlevel 3 and save it. Reboot the computer, does a new icon appear in the notification area of your top panel??? Looks like a mouse with a cord on it. Now let look at the interfaces, it is pretty much standard that Fedora will pick up your ethernet card, but check. Go to System -->Administration -->Network. Do both of your interfaces show up, might be ETH0 and maybe ETH1 or WLAN0 or something like that???? If they show up highlight them and select the edit tab. Now depending on how you are running your network either DHCP or STATIC make sure the correct boxes are checked, Also put a check in the box for "alow users to control" also remove the check from the box that says "allow on boot" Unplug your ethernet cable and reboot the computer, when the computer comes back up, plug the ethernet cable in, does the icon show a connect state???, unplug the cable and left click the NM icon, does it show the different AP's available. One other thing on your wireless, make sure you router is set to broadcast it SSID, small glitch in NM if it is set to hidden.

I'm at work right now but I don't remember seeing system/administration/services, would this be on all fc5 installations? I do have system/administration/network and that's what I'm trying to use to configure the wireless connection. wired works ok. Here's another weird thing... If i hit new - wireless - wlan0 - and create a new profile. I set to dhcp and set all the other options like ssid, channel, mode etc. I close save and then open back up with edit and the dhcp is greyed out and static ip is checked. If I open the cfg files in etc/sysconfig/network it does have bootproto=dhcp.
I'll look for system - adminsitration - services when I get home but I thought I already looked for it reading something from another post.
thanks for the response.
