I have just recently upgraded from Fedora Core 2 to Fedora Core 5. The FC 2 I was using was itself an upgrade from either FC1 or some redhat version. I suspect my problems are related to having ancient files subtly bollixing things up.
I wanted to take a look at the kernel source and found section 8.6 of the release notes. Step 3 of that section calls for the command:
rpm -Uvh kernel-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5.src.rpm
(It actually gives a version parameterized example.)
Earlier steps explicitly showed using su, so I assumed this should be run in user mode. When I attempted to do this I got the error:
error: cannot write to %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
The release notes however said:
This command writes the RPM contents into ${HOME}/rpmbuild/SOURCES and ${HOME}/rpmbuild/SPECS, where ${HOME} is your home directory.
Any suggestions on how I should proceed in installing the kernel sources?
As an aside, another reason I wanted to install the kernel sources is to fix the broken symlink from /lib/modules/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5/build to /usr/src/kernels/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5-i686
