Modem connection speed

I have a "U. S. Robotics 56K FAX EXT" modem and it won't connect any faster than about 33.6 or 31.2. Is there anything I can do to make it connect at the speeds it connects at under Windows XP? I usually get like 42.6 or 44.0 with that.

Thanks!
