Need help with refresh rate problem

im currently using my friends monitor, which is a Gateway EV700AA and the refresh rate is a little higher than it should be. It's runing at 1024x768 @ 85hz when it should be running at 1024x768 @ 75hz.

How do I fix this. I don't want to fry the monitor for using the wrong settings. Can't find an option in Gnome that allows me to set a refresh rate :/.

edit: If this help, you can find info on the monitor here

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Don't think you can hurt anything changing the refresh rate.
