Grub question and Login (init 3 or 5) question

Ok, here is my issue. First, if you are already in Xwindows from the default FC5 login, is there any way to exit out of Xwindows without a reboot? Updating NVIDIA drivers requires you not to be in Xwindows. Only way i currently know how to do it is to edit the inittab file in the /etc directory and change the default to init 3, then change it back to init 5 when you are done. Is there any way to exit out of Xwindows after logging in under the default init 5. CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE and typing "init 3" at a terminal just hang after going to a black screen with the boot-up/shutdown text.

Also, I would love to be able to set up grub to have an Init 5 login and a init 3 login, but did not see an easy way to do this in the grub.conf file in the /boot directory. Has anyone else done this or know how to do it??

I would exit back to the login manager and then hit Alt-Ctrl-F1. Login as root and use the command ' init 3 '.
Do your install and then type ' init 5 ' to get X back up.
Hit Alt-Ctrl-F7 to get back to login manager.

if you want to do it from grub, you just add a "3" to the end of your boot line to take you to runlevel 3.

You'd have to create a duplicate entry - leave one as normal as that boots runlevel 5 by default. The other, add a 3 to the end of the boot line. Oh - and label them so you don't forget!

Edit: You can always edit the grub lines as you boot. Pressing e when on the menu allows this. Then you just add the desired runlevel to your boot line and boot the system.
