kernel-devel - How to install after FC5 installation?

We installed FC5 on a Sun U40.

The NVIDIA ethernet modules on the motherboard do not
work, unless you compile chipset drivers. For this
we need either kernel-devel (or kernel-src?) rpm -qa
shows that only kernel-smp is installed.

We do not have a working ethernet connection, so I cannot
use yum. I looked through the 5 iso CDs under /cdrom/Fedora/RPMS
for the kernel-devel rpms.

There is
kernel-xen0-devel
kernel-xenU-devel

but not kernel-devel

Is there a differenr rpm I should be looking for, or is there a way
to install this via a different application?

I tried Add/Remove Software but the popup comes up "Unable to
retrieve software information".

Any advice appreciated.

Anne

just do "yum install kernel-devel" or you can download it manually and install it with the package manager.

Thanks but we do not have a network on this machine. The yum options
in the man page don't list how to just download the rpm.

Is there another command to download from the repository?

so you can download rpm from somewhere like:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/se...y=kernel-devel
or search googel
and copy it to your machine and install...

Then you need kernel-smp-devel, not kernel-devel. It's on the CDs, just look more carefully.

It's a front-end to yum and needs a network connection.

Thanks. Got the kernel-smp-devel. Now it's complaining about needing
/usr/sbin/hardlink which is from kernel-utilities.

rpmfind only has this for FC3. Maybe this should be on the CDs also??

I installed kernel-smp-devel with --nodeps and figured out that I could run

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run --kernel-name=`uname -r` \
--kernel-source-path=/usr/src/kernels/2.6.15-1.2054-FC5-smp-i686

but it has problems building the kernel module. Maybe NVIDIA isn't ready
for FC5??

Hardlink is a separate package in FC5, there's no "kernel-utils".

Yhanks for the hardlink info.

I just read that the NVIDIA drivers install in kernel 2133 (we have 2.6.15-1.2054).

So I'll get those rpms and start over.

Sure is nice when you have a network.

Unfortunately http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html had the kernel src rpm for
2133, but not the kernel rpm.

I had to punt and install Red Hat Enterprise Linux for now because we had
to get the machine up. Thank you for suggestions and help.
