How can I Make and exact hard drive copy to another disk ?

hi guys ,

I have I 15 g disk drive , and I want to pass all the data to another disk .

I would like to make an exact copy to my entire disk to another .

The problem is that the first disk , it's a litle small .

Would It be possible to pass all the data to the second disk and make it bootable ?

How can I do re allocate space in the second disk ? I want to make /home and /var a more big partitions that I have in the first disk .

any help would be apreciatted .

thanks in advance

Richard

Well, you can use dd to make an exact copy. But it sounds like you want to alter your partitiong, and that isn't really "exact"...

If you just want to copy contents, you can just cp them over, though I think cp will skip hidden files by default. But is that the general gist of what you want?

i've done it with acronis true image - move from a 30gb to a 80gb and just made / (root) fill the extra space.

dd if=/dev/OLDHARDDRIVE of=/dev/NEWHARDDRIVE

Once that is done, just use a partition tool to increase the size of the partitions as you see fit.

hi brandor ,

I want to ask you about the copy ... The other disk has linux ext3 partitions , I don't mind if in the process the partitions on the second disk are overwritten , do I have to delete all the partitions in order to make an exact copy from the original disk to the other disk ? I want that the space not used in the second disk stay as not used or free to reallocate space to /home and /var .

Thanks

Richard

You might want to use dd to fill the new hard drive with zeroes. Something like:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/NEWHARDDRIVE

You should probably look that up, it's probably not exactly what you want to do.

After you do that then do the original dd command I posted the extra space should be available to use how you see fit.
