sftp and ssh

how do I use ssh and sftp to transfer entire directories and including their subdirectories?

I know to use put /my local folder/*.* /remote folder/
but this only copies the files from one folder to another...

I don't know if you can. It is not listed as an option under the Man page.

hmmn, that's too bad then, how do the ftp clients do it then? I think gftp and kasablanca can both do this. is sftp very different from gftp?

It is a secure mode as all usernames and passwords are transmitted in encrypted mode over ssh. Did you "Google" it?

If you've got ssh access to a remote server, look into rsync.

`scp -r [directory_name] user@domain:[path_to_location_on_server]`
