internet connection in fedora 5

i just installed fedora core 5. can anyone help me configuring my internet setup. i have an adsl connection with aan external modem.

how to ping the router??? i dont have a router! its a usb modem. when i lauch linux it recogises it as USB-ADSL. there are two lights on the nodem. one for power and the second for adsl. the adsl remains off, until i take out usb cable and plus agian. then linux cannt the see the modem. y?
