Broken Kernel in FC5

So, I'm trying to move from 2.6.15 to 2.6.17 in order to get ivtv working. I accidentally uninstall all of my kernels and now my installation won't boot. Is there any way short of completely reinstalling to fix this?

Here's what I did:
yum remove kernel-2.6* #here's where I deleted all of my kernels :-(
yum install kernel #here's where I tried to reinstall one of them

It then loaded up 2.6.17 (i thought), but when I boot, it tells me that the file isn't found for the kernel 2.6.15. Then, it reboots and does it again.

Quick specs for the machine (don't think it's necessary, but you can never tell):
Via EPIA m10000 (i386 architecture)
onboard video, lan, etc.
Hauppauge PVR-150 card.
E-IDE Seagate HD at 320 GB
512 MB RAM

It's frustrating because I'd just finished updating everything I thought, but when I tried to load ivtv for the PVR card, it told me it hadn't updated the kernel. This was after reboot, so I thought the new kernel should have been in there. Oh well.

Any help appreciated.

Hello:
Boot from your FC install disc and select F5 and type linux rescue
follow along with the on-screen instructions and make sure you enable your network connection.
At the last prompt #
type
chroot /mnt/sysimage
enter
type
rpm -aq | grep kernel
check the output to see which, if any kernels you have installed?
if you have one installed then edit your /etc/grub so you can boot from it.
You can do this from the grub screen by typing e for edit and cursor to the appropriate lines and change the kernel version
Once you get booted you can update using yum.

with the network enabled you can use yum to install a kernel
yum install kernel

if this does not work for you then from the command line you can use
wget

If you are using FC5 for example: cd /home/username:
wget http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...4_FC5.i686.rpm

Once it's downloaded then run rpm -ivh *.rpm
to install the kernel

If you want to remove a kernel you should probably use
rpm -e kernel XXX.xXXX

Thanks

I still had the newest kernel (2.6.17-1.287_FC5) installed. I was able to find it with the pipe>grep command, then edited it in the grub loader. It booted successfully and I was able to finish the install with yum. Thanks so much for your help.

Hello:
Good stuff
glad you got it sorted out.
Just remember if you want to remove a kernel then open a terminal and log in as root using
su -
password
then
rpm -aq | grep kernel

then rpm -e the kernel you want to remove.
At least that way you won't blow them all away by accident.
