Seeking advice on building server

Hi folks,

I'm prepared building a server providing following functions;

1) free web hosting on Internet
2) free webmail service on Internet
3) as database and file server serving LAN

At the beginning Xfce4 will be run as desktop which is considered necessary to run web browser for searching technical documents on Internet. Text browser is not so convenient, in my personal opinion. I ran elinks, etc. before. After finishing fine tuning the server X will be removed. Then a workstation will be connected to the server replacing its job.

What will be the basic packages needed?

Please provide some guidance. TIA

First of all, you should not use the same machine as a public server on the Internet and a LAN file/database server. You need separate public and private servers, on separate networks with a firewall between them.

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention that it is a test only. The server is not for production.

On a web server do I need mysql? Tks.

i don't know if this is what you are looking for, but, http://www.dyndns.com/ works great with my wrt54g linksys router. they provide a free redirect service and will give you a free sub domain name. I have also found that using two nic's can come in handy from time to time, esp. if you are going to have heavy traffic from the LAN and the internet at the same time.

Even for a test machine, if you open it to the Net and same time to LAN, you're calling for trouble.

From the sound of what you're looking to do you'll need at least:

- Apache (+ modules you want to provide e.g. PHP, mod_perl etc)
- FTP server (for clients)
- Mailserver
- MySQL
- Depending on your LAN setup and atatched machines, Samba for file sharing (or use ftp)

That's a lot for one box to handle especially if it gets busy.

Also don't forget the firewall (iptables), spam filtering (SpamAssassin), virus scanner (ClamAV) plus other security tools.

Noted with tks.

I'll install iptables for this test. The data are sample files only having no commercial value.

I ran floppy firewall several years ago making use of an obsolete PC. However for simplicity I won't erect it for this test.

Others noted with tks.
