Mobility Radeon X1400 not accepting the RADEON driver

I have a dell E1505 with a mobility radeon x1400. When i try to configure the card using system -> administration -> display, i tell it to use the radeon driver but when i reboot it can not start the xserver. Then it tells me to create a new configuration. Is there any way to fix this?
