nVidia driver issues - even after kernel update

Basically, I've been having issues installing the nVidia driver for my GeForce fx 5200 grahics card.

I've tried so many suggestions - all to no avail.

A grep search of all kernel files returns
Code:
kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6
kernel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6
kernel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6
kernel-xen-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6
kernel-headers-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6
At this point, I'll really be darned if I don't have the updated kernel architecture installed.

Here's the topic describing what I've been doing...

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...wpost&t=138471

Oh, and Yes, I've done the following --

Code:
rpm -e --allmatches kernel.i586
rpm -e --allmatches kmod-nvidia.i586
yum install kernel.i686
yum install kmod-nvidia.i686
...but I've been getting strange errors -- an example being -

Code:
[root@localhost ~]# yum install kmod-nvidia.i686
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Parsing package install arguments
No Match for argument: kmod-nvidia.i686
Nothing to do

Andrew, I see from the other thread you are thick into it. You have got the right idea, but since you didnt update the i586 kernel to i686 first thing I think you are in very muddy water. This is a stupid suggestion because we are supposed to troubleshoot and fix our problems, but depending on how far you are into this and how much further time you want to waste, you might want to think about a clean install and going to the bug wiki that dan provided first thing. I botched my system yesterday and had to do a clean install today and it went smooth as glass now that I know the drill. Change i586 ti i686 via http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/FC6Common directions, then yum update kernel then install kernel development and kmod-nvidia via livna. Then breeze over to firewings howto and do the simple 4 step process to install AGLIX/Beryl and get it going. If the rpm -e all matches isnt working I think you are beating a dead horse here.

Thanks for the directions, JN. When I have a bit of time, I'll give it a try. I think it will be the 4th time I've reinstalled Fedora today if I try it today.

Can you clarify a bit on the 3rd step?

(1) Change i586 ti i686 via http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/FC6Common directions
(2) yum update kernel
(3) install kernel development and kmod-nvidia via livna???? What is linva?
(4) firewings howto and do the simple 4 step process to install AGLIX/Beryl

Regardless, I'll have to set this up later.

Hi Andrew and JN4

I did not realize we were working two threads at once.

JN4 : Now that you are working with Andrew, I will bow out. I know he is in good hands To let you know where I was headed, please check the other thread for my last post. Thanks, JN4!

Andrew : Too many Chiefs, and not enough indians will confuse the issue far more than help it. Sorry I had to take off for a few hours. As you can see above, I have every confidence in JN4. He's helped me out of more than one jam. I believe he can get you up and running in no time!

Dan

Ahh yes, Livna is a repository that has the nvidia and ati moduals along with your mp3, wma and other dirty codecs. You might also want to browse to http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-fc6.html for a great install guide. Just su in place of sudo unless you want to create a sudo account. And be sure you boot into kernel 2849 BEFORE you install the kmod-nvidia. (it doesnt really matter, but it will freak you out if you forget you are in the old kernel and nvidia still wont work when you restart x.)

edit: Dont run off too far Dan, it is 11 PM here and the wife is warming up the bed! Just thought I'd add my 2 cent worth. I admit I'm a coward, but an old trick I learned from my Windows days: Dont fight it, just reinstall...In the long run you waste much less time...

I'll come back to this issue in a couple of weeks. Hopefully we can pick up where we let off. I just don't have the patience to reinstall Fedora a 5th time at the moment. The thought of it makes me cringe.

Thanks for all your help, and cant wait to resolve this issue in a couple of weeks.
