Asterisk with Linuxant driver

I am using a Conexant HCF modem and am trying to get the Asterisk program to recognize it. I already have the Asterisk and Zaptel programs installed, and I have the Linuxant driver (http://www.linuxant.org), but I haven't been able to find a program to test the modem's ability to make calls, and I don't know where to begin in getting Asterisk to recognize the modem. Do I really need an FXO card instead, or is there a way to do this?
