chkconfig problem

I'm new to this site so thanks in advance for the help.

On FC4. Executing

/sbin/chkconfig --list

nothing is returned. There is no output. All of the init scripts in /etc/init.d have the appropriate chkconfig commented entries. The services are loading at boot, just not displaying with chkconfig.

What's up with that?

you are misssing the services

chkconfig --list sendmail

if you want to turn sendmail on for level 3,4,5 you do this

chkconfig --level 345 sendmail on

I should have been more specific. Knowing that squid is running I execute

/sbin/chkconfig --list squid

and nothing is returned. This is true for any service parameter I pass to chkconfig.

#chkconfig --list

should always return all bootup scripts services

unless you have a different chkconfig binary or script.

have you tried

#chkconfig --help

to know which chkconfig version and copyrights.

and

ps axuw | grep chkconfig

(perhaps its in defunct state)

I agree with you. I have tried what you suggest. I just ran again and here are the results

[tmp]# /sbin/chkconfig --help
[tmp]#
[tmp]# ps axuw | grep chkconfig
root 24952 0.0 0.1 4840 672 pts/5 R+ 10:22 0:00 grep chkconfig
[tmp]#

In addition

[tmp]# ls -la /sbin/chkconfig
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Nov 21 13:15 /sbin/chkconfig
[tmp]#

Hummm....interesting. A zero byte binary. Those aren't very productive. <g> It is behaving as I would expect however...hang on...looks like I'm going to reinstall the RPM for chkconfig.

that should do it. goodluck!
for your reference, my FC6 chkconfig

-rwx------ 1 root root 46748 Feb 25 2006 chkconfig

but the original should be

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 46748 Feb 25 2006 chkconfig
