saslauthd acting up!

Hi,
I am using saslauth to authenticate for smtp. The system is a plain FC4.
The odd thing is the saslauthd loads at boot and appears in the process list, but wont work for smtp authentication.
Now, if I invoke it with: saslauthd -a shadow it will work just find.
The init.d loads it with the same options but for some reason it wont work. I already disabled SE Linux and that isn't the culprit.
Anyone have any ideas?
