n00b changing text files

whenever i try to change text files in the bin, or in etc directory it wont allow me to save it cuz it says i dont have permissions?...total noob, sorry guys

Can't change those as normal user. Have to be root.

You need to be the 'root' user to do that. If you're not comfortable using the command line, then probably the easiest way to do this is to just logout and then log back in as root. Once you've made the changes you want, you should logout (since it's risky to stay logged in as root, in case you make a mistake) and then log back in with your normal user ID.
