FC6 Hal mounts usb hard drive as root.root 755
How do I stop this and get it to mount the drive so the user can write? It does that fine with usb flash drives and my memory card reader.

Hello:
You can use gconf-editor and under /system/storage/default_options/
select the type and either amend or add a new default mount option

Well, it's ext3, which is not mentioned in there.

Hello:
Sorry, don't have one to try, however, when you have it plugged in you could try
chmod 755 - R /media/nameofusbdrive

i have struggled with this exact problem since udev came out.... plug in an ipod or thumb drive, you can read/write to it but try and execute something from it... good luck
whats that you say? just chmod the mount point? cant do that, udev/hal will win that war
its a shame because there is a nice linux app called yamipod that runs from the ipod, however it wont execute even if you are root

Hello:
You can hack / amend /change the /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi
It may be a little bit of trial and error, however, it can be done.
The layout / sections are fairly intuitive
Or you can create a new .fdi if you like.
As always, back up the files first and you should be fine.

Well, you may be correct, however I have done it successfully before, however, it was not a ext3 filesystem. Now, it may also because I have amended some of the fdi files as well. Not sure, so again you may well be correct.

just change the udev rules for the device in /etc/udev/rules.d and change the mode to 0770, and make sure you are in the group that has ownership

Hello:
When your USB device is plugged in what entry is generated in your /etc/mtab file
Can you post that and I will see if I can help, if Nick does not get back here

Hello:
Let's try one more thing before attempting to edit the udev rules
when the device in question is plugged in
as root using
su -
yourpassword
chown username:username -R /media/devicename
Then unmount the volume and reboot and when your system comes up plug in the drive and see what if anything has changed

Hello:
The easiest way to change the volume name is to do it in windows ....
There are other ways, I believe, although at the moment I cannot recall how to do it.....! Sorry failing memory.
Perhaps someone else can chime in with a way to do it.
