Xfce on FC1 troubles...

Hey all, hope everyone is doing well.

The Machine - a PII 266 96M ram, 4G HDD. (I know, but it was my first laptop, so cut a guy some slack)

What I am trying to do - I installed FC1 on the laptop, ran OK but chuggy. So I figured, I'd remove KDE and Gnome, use Xfce. Remove Mozilla and use Dillo, remove OO, and use Abiword, etc. In the hopes that I can get it to a usuable level.

The Problems:
First Yum failed to work. Kept on telling my I had the wrong GPG keys, although I downloaded as I was told from FedoraLegacy. I have since seen that they are no longer maintaining FC1, so I guess that was it. I changed the gpg check = 0, to update the system, and that seemed to work well enough.

Secondly, Xfce and Dillo wasn't in the Yum repo's, so I grapped the rpms and installed both from there. Dillo went like a charm, but Xfce is not showing up in my "sessions" section on the main log in screen. I double checked to make sure that Xfce was installed, and it says it is, but still no XFCE option.

What did I do wrong? Any thoughts, or is this just a futile effort for a machine that age?

P.S - I like fedora best, so I really don't want to go to xubuntu or dsl, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think the futile part may be the FC1. Did you by chance check out this thread?

as this is exactly what we are discussing. That 96MB is your big problem, I dont think even XFCE is going to run right. I was running a 64MB laptop graphically with Damn Small linux (DSL) and Fluxbox using the Rox filer. You might be able to do a very stripped install of say Gentoo, maybe Debian or something along those lines and use Fluxbox. If there was any way possible to up your RAM above 128MB I think you could comfortably run most distros with Fluxbox. But I am afraid the days of Linux running on next to no resources are long gone. And those old distros just offer no support and new apps cant run on the old base.

edit: Try fluxbox with FC1 then when that doesnt work give DSL a shot, it really is a neat OS. When you get fed up with playing with the old junk just do what I did with my lappy, turn it into a digital picture frame
