ssh -X slow

Because of firewall rules, I need to login to a remote box using ssh -X, and need to be able to run occasional gtk apps on the remote box.

Inexplicably, the drawing, etc of the gtk app or even apps like Firefox, Acrobat, etc. are incredibly slow. Anybody know what might be causing this?

Thank you.

First, try "ssh -Y ...".

When you access a remote system like this you are writing all the X server/client traffic over your network connection. That works pretty well on the same LAN, but it's a little painful when you have to traverse the internet. When is your network connection to the remote system like ?
