Unhappy Snort Problem

Hi i had followed all the instructions on the snort.org doc but the only thing is that when i start snort in /etc/init.d it
says

snort dead but subsys locked

what am i doing wrong?

i get exactly the same error ... preprocess strem 4 error i guess .. can anyone also direct me to how any documentation on how to setup BASE (SNORT) .. please .. thanks in advance

try using the "snort -T -c /etc/snort/snort.conf " command it may tell you where its failing
