Broadcom working with native support (bcm43xx)! Now... question about ifup...

Hi,

I followed the suggestions outlined here:

http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthr...hlight=bcm43xx

and was FINALLY able to get my Broadcom wireless card working on my Compaq. I'm so thankful to have finally got it working!

Now here's the thing...

The way I get it running is to bring up the network manager, make sure my ethernet cable is disconnected, and then activate eth1 in the manager. Sometimes I have to fool around with it a couple times (ie. disable then enable), but I usually get it to work.

But, what if I just want to get it running from the command line? Then I can use it with fluxbox without having to worry about the network manager. But no matter what, whenever I use "ifup eth1", it always gives the no connection error and tells me to check the cable.

Can anyone help me to understand why this is - and how I can get my wireless working without the use of the Network Manager software?

Thanks so much!

Same here. Also the card wil stop working from time to time. Haven't found a solution for this problem till now, but i've seen reports regarding the same problem. Also it seems quite common that the card will ony connect on 11Mbit whilst it is 54Mbit capeble

Well, after more fooling around and trying different things, I've found ndiswrapper works the best for me. More stable than using the native drivers.

I finally got my broadcom working with native support and wpa_supplicant in KDE (no Network-Manager). After three weeks of pulling my hair out editing the wpa_supplicant.conf, network scripts and device configuration, I found the culprit was my router causing the instability. I have the Linksys WRT54G ver. 5 with the "easy secure setup". After disabling this "feature" in the router and the 10/100 ethernet (eth0) at start up, it connects flawlessly everytime. I also installed the wpa_supplicant-gui and have used it to connect to other WPA enabled APs without any issues.
I had the best results following the instructions given here for installing fw-cutter and configuration...http://computerbits.wordpress.com/20...llation-notes/
I too, could not connect using the command line.

Hey MikeG,

Thanks for sharing your success. It's glad to see we can get this thing working both ways. I've really had no problems since getting it working with ndiswrapper. However, my next laptop will not be using a Broadcom card!

Cheers.
