3d with sis integrated video

I have an integrated sis 741 video card. It works fine in normal usage but is incredibly slow and jerky for 3d apps. I cannot play Neverball for instance.

When I run glxgears it runs smooth for about 1 sec and then becomes jerky and the cpu usage shoots up to 100%. If I try to run glxinfo then the screen blacks out and after a few seconds returns me to the login screen.

Can anyone help me get 3d working on my system please.
