Question hang after reboot after a complete install

Fedora Core 6 installed with only one problem--It could not identify my Video. This is literally a brand new motherboard--ASUS A8V-VM with VIA DeltaChrome Graphics--the old motherboard died suddenly. During installation I successfully Booted to X-window under Anaconda. Everything installed OK, I guess. When I rebooted after installation the kernel booted up just fine. After a couple of OK's the monitor went completely black with an "out of range" message on my LCD monitor--there was hard drive activity for a minute or so afterwards--then nothing except "out of range" message. I had no problem installing windows xp on this motherboard.

Post your xorg.conf and the specs on your LCD and the video chipset.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

I reinstalled fedora core 6 on a seperate hard drive from my windows. As I guessed correctly I can boot to a terminal. What I need to know exactly what is the command(s) from the terminal to echo the contents of a file (xorg.conf) to the terminal, remember I have no X window at all.

LCD max resolution is 1024 x 768 and my graphics processor max resolution is 1400 x 900.

I am trying to give Lazlow what he wanted but am having trouble doing so.

My fedora is so messed up that I am responding to this forum by use of windows xp only!!!!

I think all you need to do is add {Modes "800x600" } in the line right after Depth 24. Do not add the {} just what is inside it. That is all I can see that your are short. Unless there is more above it that is relavent.

Here is part of mine but it has a lot of customized stuff in it.

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "Unknown"
ModeLine "1440x900_75" 136.8 1440 1536 1688 1936 900 901 904 940 -hsync +vsync
ModeLine "1440x900_60" 106.5 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932 -hsync +vsync
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "GeForce 6600"
Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "metamodes" "1440x900_75 +0+0; nvidia-auto-select +0+0; 1440x900 +0+0"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1440x900_75"
EndSubSection
EndSection

As far as the lock out, I can see that you are not banned , but that is about all.

I have accidently deleted the xorg.conf file and do not know how to recover it. I tried to install Fedora core 7 Test 2 over it and I kept getting an error that said "Unable to find any devices of the type needed for this installation type". I found out by trying over and over that I must use the "linux ide=nodma" with fedora core 6 to install it period from my DVDrw drive. I probably need to use the same command with Fedora 7 as well but cannot figure out how to do it.

What you are trying to do is called hijacking a thread. Unless you have a very similiar problem (this is not) it is considered very bad manners to do this.

Start your own thread.

I apologize, but I am posting info coming from glenngds. He has reported to me that he can no longer post, some kind of Administrative lockout. He tried to change his email address on this forum from one thing to another and got completely locked out. He reports that he may have accidently entered an invalid email address. Glenn Sullivan is glenngds and I am his brother John Sullivan. Anyway Glenn's old email address is no longer valid, because Comcast has taken over for Road Runner in Shreveport. If there is an Administrator with an ax to grind against Glenn, I may find myself locked out as soon as I make this post.

John

Sorry to jump on you, but you did not mention this before. Since this is a completely different issue, I would still start a new thread. FC7 is still beta and I have not even looked at it.

Glenn says success at last.

What he did is to finally figure out how to use vi in a terminal
edited xorg.conf to read:
Section "Device"
Indentifier "Videocard 0"
Driver "vesa"
End Section

Section "Screen"
Indentifier "Screen 0"
Device "Videocard 0"
DefaultDepth 16
Subsection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768"
End Subsection
EndSection

it appears that 24 bit color mode is not supported with this video processor, only 16 bit and 32 bit color modes are supported.
