Themes

i used to use knoppix which was real gui/easy to make a desktop the exact way i wanted it.. i just recently moved over to fc6 64bit and all the stock themes are pretty lame except the high contrast(kinda hte theme i used in knoppix) is there anyway or file i can edit to change some of the colors in high contrast to non pink and fix some of the icons (they just appear red circles)

i heard i can run gnome in one of the four windows and and kde in the other..
in knoppix i could have four windows but each one could have a different back ground.. when i do it in fedora it applies to all four?

I think you can do that with KDE and there's a ton of themes for gnome at: http://www.gnome-look.org/ and KDE http://www.kde-look.org/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xnest

Haven't used it in FC but search yum.

a command like:

gdmflexiserver --xnest

should get you a login screen in a new window. You'll need a separate account.

Sometimes there will be more than one theme, extract it and see if there are other archives than just drag and drop those on the theme window.

im in theme preferences and im dragging the smoked glass theme into theme window no go.
tried dropping the gtk2.0 folder to theme window no go. Tried dropping metacity theme into theme window no go. Tried dropping the smoked glass theme extension into it no go.. THen i even tried going to usr\share\theme and putting the whole unpacked folder in there but says i dont haveprivileges, so im guessing i have to move it VIA root through terminal?

Not sure what you're trying to install but if you post a link I'll try it and see how it works for me.

Neo isn't available all the links are broken, so you can cross that one off your list.

Neutronium works fine just download it then right click it and select extract here, inside you'll find three folders with some packages, the GTK and Metacity ones you just drag and drop the packages onto the theme preferences window, don't extract them. System>Preferences>Theme.

The Emerald folder is if you are using Compiz or Beryl as your window manager, if you're using Beryl just rename the packages from .cgwdtheme to .emerald then use Emerald theme manager to try to install them.

BTW You like dark themes, huh? search for Ater at that site.

Nope, don't extract the theme, drop the tarball onto the theme manager and it will take care of all the nitty-gritty stuff like that.

For transparencies you'll need either Compiz or Beryl installed. There are quite a few threads on those topics already. My hardware is too ancient to run them so I can't help you there.

To continue your education though, if you do extract a theme all is not lost. In your Home folder there are hidden files and directories whose names are preceded by a dot. To unhide them look in the 'View' menu of Nautilus file manager. untarred themes can be dropped into /home/joeuser/.themes and icon sets into /home/joeuser/.icons. See attached pic.
